spanking child, bully making?in a 2005 U.S. poll, 72 percent of adults said it was okay to spank a child.

in New Orleans, At Tulane University’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, researchers conducted a survey of 2500 mothers of children who were three years old.

They asked if the mothers spanked their children.

49.5% did not spank their children
25% spank their children infrequently
26.5% spank their children frequently

They followed up two years later. Factoring out other influences on the children’s mothers, such as drugs, domestic violence, neglect, income, age, race and education. and believed they found that spanking was the primary factor in determining which children have become aggressive.

Certianly I am not a doctor, and I was not a part of their survey, but if I put on my common sense hat and look at this..
There are a variety of reasons, spanking among them, that children become aggressive:

  • Children who have low self esteem are more prone to becoming aggressive.

  • Children who are slow to develop communication skills often become frustrated and fall back on violence and aggression to express themselves.

  • Children who are under some sort of stress or who suffer from some sort of emotional problems, show aggression in their behavior.

  • Aggressive behavior in children could be due to mocking the behavior of friends or role models who are violent or aggressive in their behavior.

  • If a child is the victim of abuse, emotionally or physically, he may start behaving aggressively.

  • Being parked in front of the television all the time watching other people interact with each other violently can lead towards violent behavior.

  • Playing violent video games can on some level reinforce violent behavior

  • Children who are spanked learn that hitting is a way to punish, which can lead to violent behavior

Certainly there are right and wrong ways to spank a child. However I don't believe that spanking all by itself creates bullies.
