Carlos age 14, Mr. Smith the teacher, Mikal age 14 Carlos is a good student. He moved to this school when he was in the 4th grade and then he spoke little English, since his home language was Spanish. He is now in the 8th grade and has many friends who are also native Spanish speakers. He usually doesn’t hang around with those who are not of the Hispanic decent. Mikal is also a good student. He gets good grades and is active in the drama club at school. Mikal has few friends that he considers close to him. He has acquaintances but doesn’t spend a lot of time with the same person. Mikal is Caucasian and speaks very little Spanish, besides counting and color words that he learned in elementary school. Mikal is teased by Carlos and his group of friends. He is an easy target since he is alone most of the time. Mikal knows that Carlos and his friends are talking about him, although he doesn’t understand what they are saying. They laugh and make jokes about him right in front of him and there isn’t anything Mikal can do since he doesn’t know how to talk to Carlos and his friends. Finally Mikal has had enough. After careful thought, he decides to talk to Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith is the Spanish teacher at the school. Mikal tells Mr. Smith what is going on and how that it is making him feel. They brainstorm about how that they can solve the problem. Mikal and Mr. Smith found a great way for Mikal, Carlos and the other boys to get along. He suggested the Mikal take the Spanish class. Mr. Smith asked Carlos and the other boys to help Mikal learn the language. Now that Carlos and the other boys feel like they are helping Mikal, they are becoming friends. Mikal is beginning to understand what the boys are saying and so they are not as likely to say things that are hurtful because he might understand them. But the great part is that Carlos and the boys don’t want to say mean things about Mikal because they are becoming good friends now.
